Dental Veneer
A Dental Veneer is a thin layer of tooth coloured material placed over a tooth surface, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer: Composite and Porcelain. With veneers it’s possible to transform crooked, stained, damaged or badly worn teeth into a brand new, straight, white smile, giving a great looking smile in only one or two simple appointments.
Dental Veneers can be used for:
- Stained teeth. Badly stained teeth that cannot be improved by teeth whitening, can be greatly improved by dental veneers.
- Damaged teeth. Badly worn , chipped or broken teeth, can benefit from veneers.
- Gaps. Small spaces or gaps between your front teeth can be easily closed using dental veneers, resulting in a perfect smile.
- Malformed teeth. For teeth that are malformed, veneers can be placed over their front surface to give a straight and perfectly looking smile.
Longevity of dental veneers
Porcelain veneers typically last between five and ten years. Dental veneers can be replaced if needed.
Post operative care
This requires good oral hygiene and regular visits to your hygienist.
Treatment stages
- Stage 1. Initial assessment and treatment planning. Following consent minor contouring of the tooth to prevent the veneer making the tooth look or feel bulky.The colour is matched to your surrounding teeth using a shade guide
- Stage 2. The veneer will be tried in to check that the fit and aesthetics are satisfactory and then bonded into place.
After Care
- Brush and floss twice a day. Keeping veneers clean is your best insurance.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day and visit your dentist regularly.
- Avoid frequent snacking, which promotes tooth decay.
- Protect them by not biting metal objects and by wearing a mouthguard for contact sports.
