Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth shaped cap that is placed over a tooth covering it to improve its appearance and to restore its shape, size and strength. A dental crown covers your existing tooth protecting the entire surface from any further decay or erosion.

A dental crown can be used:

1. To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
2. To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
3. To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
4. To cover misshapen or severely discoloured teeth
5. Following  root canal treatment of a tooth which would have rendered the tooth brittle and prone to fracture.

Permanent crowns can be made from all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic. To fit the crowns, a thin layer is shaved off tooth that is due to receive treatment, and this prepares them for the crowns.
